Mazda Production and Sales Results for December 2008 and for January through December 2008 (flash report)

Mazda Motor Corporation’s production and sales results for December 2008 and for January through December 2008 are summarized below.

I. Production

1. Domestic Production
(1) December 2008
The domestic production volume for December 2008 decreased 42.5% compared to December 2007, due to decreased production of passenger and commercial vehicles.

Mazda2 (Demio):	11,718 units	(down 25.1% year-on-year)

(2) January through December 2008
The domestic production volume for the period January through December 2008 exceeded the figure for the same period in 2007, up 8.4% year-on-year, due to increased production of the Mazda2 (Demio), Mazda6 (Atenza) and Mazda5 (Premacy).

2. Overseas Production
(1) December 2008
The overseas production volume for December 2008 decreased 36.5% year-on-year, due to the impact of suspended production at AutoAlliance International (AAI) and a production halt caused by labor-management negotiations at AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT), among other factors.

The overseas production volume for the period January through December 2008 decreased 8.1% compared to the same period in 2007, despite increased production of the Mazda6.

Reflecting the drop in overall market demand, the domestic sales volume for December 2008 decreased 20.3% year-on-year, despite increased sales of the Mazda6 (Atenza), AZ-Wagon and other models.
Mazda’s registered vehicle market share was 4.7% (down 0.2 points year-on-year), with a 2.7% share of the micro-mini segment (up 0.1 points) and a 3.9% total market share (down 0.2 points).

Mazda6 (Atenza):	533 units	(up 98.9% year-on-year)
AZ-Wagon:	1,880 units	(up 10.1% year-on-year)

(2) January through December 2008
Although sales of the Mazda6 (Atenza) and AZ-Wagon increased, the domestic sales volume for January through December 2008 decreased 3.7% year-on-year, reflecting the drop in market demand.
Mazda’s registered vehicle market share was 5.8% (unchanged year-on-year), with a 3.1% share of the micro-mini segment (up 0.2 points) and a 4.8% total market share (up 0.1 points).

Amid the slowdown in global automotive demand, Mazda’s December 2008 exports decreased 38.6% year-on-year, due to reduced shipments of passenger and commercial vehicles.

Mazda2:	9,911 units	(down 25.6% year-on-year)

Exports for January through December 2008 exceeded the figure for the same period in 2007 by 9.8%, due to increased shipments of the Mazda2, Mazda6 and Mazda5.
On a market basis, exports to Europe, Oceania and other markets (the Middle East and Asia) were strong.
