SPEECHES
2010 Australian International Motor Show: Press Conference Speech
[Takashi Yamanouchi, Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO]
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. And welcome to the Mazda stand. I'm so glad that I can tell you directly how important the Australian market is for Mazda. And, today I have a special announcement about Mazda's future plan in Australia.
2010 marks the 90th anniversary of Mazda, and it is no secret that Australia is one of Mazda's most successful markets. In fact, September marked an all-time sales record for Mazda in Australia of 8,850 units. This success is attributed to two things; the professionalism of our Australian Mazda Dealer network, supported by a dedicated and committed team here at Mazda Australia, and the outstanding Mazda product portfolio that you see here today.
Today, I'm here to introduce our new line of SKY Concept engines and transmissions in Australia.
The name SKY reflects the "sky's-the-limit" aspirations of our engineers. They are doing amazing things to optimize the fuel efficiency of the internal combustion engine. By utilizing these SKY technologies across our range, we are confident that we will accomplish a 30% improvement in global fuel economy by 2015. A commitment we made over 2 years ago.
Our next-generation gasoline engine, the Mazda SKY-G, will be the core powertrain in future Mazda vehicles. By thoroughly re-examining the characteristics of combustion, our engineers were able to boost fuel efficiency by 15% while increasing engine power by the same amount. I'm pleased to announce that this new Mazda SKY-G will reach the Australian market in 2011.
Our next-generation diesel engine, the Mazda SKY-D, offers a 20% improvement in fuel efficiency over Mazda's current 2.2-liter diesel engine. I'm delighted to confirm that a future mid-sized Mazda with SKY-D and SKY-Drive automatic transmission will offer fuel economy as low as 4.2 litres per 100km, with CO2 emissions of only 112 grams per km.
I am proud to announce, here and today, that we will launch the Mazda SKY-D in Australia in 2012.
Australian drivers have a preference for automatic transmissions, our new automatic transmission, the Mazda SKY-Drive, will improve fuel economy by a further 5% and achieve a direct performance feel like that of a dual-clutch transmission to enhance Mazda's Zoom-Zoom driving experience.
Let me confirm that both Mazda SKY-G and SKY-D engines will be available with the new SKY-Drive automatic transmission in this market.
Mazda's Building Block Strategy calls for optimizing our existing technologies: engines, transmissions, weight reduction and aerodynamics. Through this strategy, we aim to benefit all our customers and minimize the cost of ownership. We will progressively introduce electric devices to our vehicles. "i-stop," our award-winning engine start-stop system is already available in some markets, and it will make its debut here in Australia next year. It will be followed by regenerative braking, and then hybrid systems.
So, with Mazda SKY-G, SKY-Drive and i-stop making their Australian debuts in 2011, and Mazda SKY-D following in 2012, Mazda's next-generation technologies are within touching distance.
Continual improvement of the Mazda line-up is imperative to meet the changing needs of our customers, which is why it gives me great pleasure to introduce to you today the newest member of the Mazda family. It's athletic and assured. It's stylish and spirited.
Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce the all-new Mazda BT-50.
What a great looking UTE. This all-new Mazda BT-50 will be sold in over 130 countries. I'm proud to say that it will go on sale first here in Australia in late 2011.
[Doug Dickson, Managing Director, Mazda Australia]
Yamanouchi-san, thank you. Good morning everyone.
As we've just heard, the all-new Mazda BT-50 will be an extremely important part of the Mazda model line-up and nowhere more so than right here in Australia.
Australia is already the world's leading Mazda BT-50 market which can in part be attributed to our love of the outdoors and interest in exploring all that this amazing country has to offer. So it's quite fitting that Australia has been chosen as the location for the global debut of this ever-important model.
Although many BT-50 buyers use their vehicle for leisure pursuits, the majority of people who buy the current-generation Mazda BT-50 use it mainly for work.
With the all-new Mazda BT-50 offering increased levels of styling and refinement, it will be a vehicle more suited to a number of different roles - work, play and even the family run-around.
In short, the all-new Mazda BT-50 will offer an entirely new experience for Australian ute drivers.
The all-new Mazda BT-50 not only supports traditional needs such as practicality and drivability but also places a greater focus on passenger car like values that lift it to the high end of the utility segment.
With its combination of an unmistakably Mazda exterior and elegant interior, the all-new Mazda BT-50 stands out as a unique offering in the light commercial segment.
More athletic than the current-generation vehicle, the all-new Mazda BT-50 demonstrates a solid presence that fills the driver with confidence and grabs the attention of passersby. And as with all other Mazda vehicles it features an athletic and assured silhouette that looks dynamic even when standing still.
We see this vehicle as appealing to those individuals who perceive their car as a means of self expression and recognize the emotional value in the fun and excitement of driving.
With a keen interest in both work and leisure and a particular love of outdoor activities regularly enjoyed with family and friends, the all-new Mazda BT-50 buyer views this vehicle as the best facilitator for their busy, multi-faceted life.
Buying trends in Australia are ever evolving and we believe that the commercial utility segment will increase in volume over the coming years and as such, the Mazda BT-50 will become even more important in the Mazda line-up.
Utilities of this size can often be considered to be a viable alternative to a large passenger car, and when we take into account the increased styling and refinement on the all-new Mazda BT-50 you begin to see where the potential really lies.
Currently, the Mazda BT-50 is outsold by our core passenger model range but we anticipate a shift in buying habits that will see it become one of Mazda Australia's best-selling models.
With all the exciting products you see on our stand today, the all-new Mazda BT-50 in the pipeline and our SKY technologies just around the corner, we see an exciting future ahead for Mazda and Australian car buyers.
In closing, thank you all for being here today, and also to Yamanouchi-san for joining us to celebrate the global unveiling of the all-new Mazda BT-50.
