2012 Paris Motor Show: Press Conference Speech

[Takashi Yamanouchi, Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO]

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and thank you for joining us today at the Mazda stand.

After spending much of 2011 preparing for the introduction of our new and innovative SKYACTIV technologies, this year got off to a quick start with the launch of the first of our new vehicles incorporating the full range of those breakthrough technologies. Quite simply, the CX-5 compact crossover utility has been a smash hit in every market that it is on sale. Beginning in Russia, then in Japan, the momentum continues to build across Europe, North America and all around the world.

In order to meet demand we announced earlier this year that we would double our SKYACTIV engine capacity and also expand our CX-5 production from 160,000 to 200,000 units per year. To be honest, even that may not be enough.

Thanks to our new SKYACTIV technologies, manufacturing innovations and sales growth in many markets Mazda was able to post positive results at the end of the first quarter of this fiscal year and is on target to accomplish our year end objectives. So we are off to a good start with the wind in our sails as we prepare to launch the second of our next generation vehicles.

Whether sedan or wagon, both body types beautifully embody KODO design and prove the new Mazda6 a worthy flagship. We even added a new colour to our palette that we think perfectly represents the passion we put into every Mazda vehicle we build. We call it "Soul Red".

The new Mazda6 delivers a driving and ownership experience our customers will appreciate. For example, in addition to the 2.2-litre SKYACTIV diesel and 2-litre SKYACTIV petrol engines that deliver outstanding fuel economy we will now add a 2.5-litre displacement to the petrol range which promises to heighten driving enjoyment even further.

And to squeeze every ounce of efficiency out of these engines we will incorporate idle-stop technology and a brake energy regeneration system, which we call "i-ELOOP". We will introduce it for the first time in the Mazda6. i-ELOOP is unique because we use a quick charging capacitor to store the electricity, rather than the more conventional approach, which is to use a battery for that purpose. This is the first time that a brake energy regeneration system with a capacitor is used to power the electrical systems in a passenger car.

In our new Mazda6 sedan, this feature combined with our idle-stop technology, standard power SKYACTIV diesel engine and 6-speed manual transmission sets a new benchmark for CO2 emissions in the CD segment: 104 grams per kilometer. And while our new Mazda6 sedan delivers class-leading fuel efficiency so too does our wagon. Thanks in part to a very low 0.28 drag co-efficient, and with the same equipment combination I just mentioned, the Mazda6 wagon is rated at 116 grams per kilometer - which is best among CD wagons with diesel engines displacing 2.2 litres or more.

We showed our new sedan and petrol engines last month in Moscow. Today, I'm pleased to unveil for you "the all-new Mazda6 Wagon". This completes the lineup of our full range of petrol and diesel models.

Ten years ago we introduced the first Mazda6 and with it the promise that every one of our vehicles will create a lasting bond with our customers. This will be accomplished with evocative styling that stirs the emotions, through insightful features that are truly valued and with driving dynamics that excite the driver. This is the promise of Zoom-Zoom. By defying conventional thinking, exploring the boundaries of our SKYACTIV technology and KODO design language, our promise lives on in the all-new Mazda6.

Thank you for joining us today. Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you our new Mazda6 wagon.
