Auto China 2024: Changan Mazda Press Conference

Hello everyone.
It is my great pleasure to join you all at Auto China and see the passion that everyone here has for the Chinese automobile market. Today, I'd like to talk to you all about two things. First, I'll discuss the Mazda brand's heritage in China. Secondly, I'd like to talk about the coming new era for Mazda's China business.
In terms of history, Mazda has a 104-year heritage. Today, Mazda operates in 130 countries worldwide. Our business in China, though, is still relatively new, having begun in 1992. We started our local mass-production in China back in 2001, and have now provided a cumulative total of over 3.85 million Mazda vehicles to customers in China.
We feel lucky because we have been blessed with great local partners. As our local partners have worked diligently together with us to build the future of our business, we have established robust and friendly partnerships.
I am pleased to have this opportunity to express my gratitude to Changan Automobile's Chairman Zhu-san, the President Wang-san, and the Chief Financial Officer Zhang-san for their leadership. Teaming up closely with Changan Automobile, Mazda is taking on the challenge of putting our business in China back on track.
Throughout its history, the automobile industry has contributed greatly to the development of society and greater convenience for the public.
However, we are not yet satisfied; we strive to do more. Our goal is to provide vehicles with stylish design, built with excellent craftsmanship and quality to provide a driving performance that lets drivers have a sense of 'Jinba-ittai,' which means "car and driver as one." We aim to help all our customers discovered the "joy of driving," making sure they enjoy every day with their Mazda, feeling full of energy and the joy of life, harnessing the car as the means of self-expression and daily positivity, experiencing the car is an integral part of their own lives.
By placing an emphasis on drivers and passengers and adopting a human-centric approach which promotes emotional engagement with the car, we are continuing to create the unique essence of the Mazda brand, an essence rooted in Mazda's heritage. It is our great pleasure if Chinese customers think that Mazda is a car company with unique values.
We always remember that the first-generation Mazda6, known under the nickname "Ma Liu," had a warm reception from many Chinese customers. With its sporty design and driving performance, it was particularly popular in Mazda's lucky color of red. The Mazda 6 was known for its exceptional handling, which earned it the title of "Cornering King," Alongside its sporty performance, I'm sure you all have memories of a red Ma Liu as a popular choice to take the bride to the wedding ceremony. After a while, our lineup expanded to include the Mazda3 and crossover SUVs including CX-5, and China became the largest single purchaser of Mazda cars among all of the world's nations in 2017.
Over the last few years, the Chinese automobile market has changed rapidly and dramatically. Driven by a desire to learn, explore, and improve manufacturing techniques, Chinese companies now lead the fields of electric vehicle technology and knowledge. Not only is there now a high level of trust in Chinese EV technology and products, we also see a strong emphasis on delivering enjoyable driving experiences through diverse innovation. At Mazda, we value the robust partnership we have developed over the years with Changan Automobile. We are embarking on a bold and ambitious plan to put our respective strengths together and grow the Mazda brand in today's rapidly changing Chinese market. Today, it is my great pleasure to unveil the latest result of our partnership with Changan Automobile.
[Mazda EZ-6 unveiled]
This is the new Mazda EZ-6. We hope that this new model will have the same impact, in today's electrified vehicle market, as the one we had with the red Ma Liu in China. The Mazda EZ-6 combines its styling, as well as the emphasis on a sense of 'car and driver as one,' which customers expect from a Mazda, with the latest electronic vehicle technology from both Changan Automobile and Mazda. We are offering the Mazda EZ-6 with two distinct powertrains, as a BEV and a PHEV. Customers can choose the model which meets their own preferences and lifestyle needs.
The Mazda EZ-6 will be our first new release, symbolizing the new era of Mazda's business in China. It is scheduled to go on sale by the end of 2024.
We never stop moving forward. We are following up the Mazda EZ-6 with another electric vehicle, this time as a concept model. Let me introduce the Mazda 創 Arata.
[MAZDA 創 ARATA unveiled]
ARATA means both "new" and "creative," and the name represents our desire to build a new era for the Mazda brand. The ARATA with its modern, refined styling, is designed to appeal to active, forward-looking Chinese customers. Like the Mazda EZ-6, the new crossover SUV is scheduled for production in two powertrain versions, a BEV and a PHEV. We intend to introduce this model during 2025. Moreover, we have started studying the third and fourth NEV models. We hope you'll look forward to this exciting new chapter in Mazda's story.
