Mazda Showcases New Technologies and Ideas at the 36th Tokyo Motor Show 2002
- Fuel-efficient and low-emission 'Titandash,' versatile cargo room 'Bongo Van' -
| Mazda Motor Corporation will unveil its Titandash Clean Diesel Hybrid truck, powered by a newly developed common-rail diesel engine with an electric motor assist system, at the 36th Tokyo Motor Show 2002* to be held from October 30 to November 3, at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center in Chiba City. Other vehicles designed for the environment, wheelchair-accessibility, and business convenience will also be exhibited. The Bongo Business Concept and Demio Business Concept assist customers with efficient business environments. The Demio-i is equipped with an extremely low floor and gentle access ramp, friendly to both the physically-challenged and those who care for them. |
| Developed with environmental consideration as the top priority, the newly developed diesel engine (MZR-CD), along with the hybrid system, delivers optimum control to dramatically reduce the exhaust gas emissions of the Titandash Clean Diesel Hybrid. It is also approximately 50% more fuel-efficient than an identical model powered by a conventional diesel engine. |
| The Bongo Business Concept and the Demio Business Concept are equipped with an extensive range of insightful enhancements to assist drivers. The Bongo Business Concept employs a cargo space design allowing exceptional versatility for loading and a fleet management system interactively connecting each driver with the control center. The Demio Business Concept, also using highly advanced information technologies, features a cargo area with a super-low floor and a ramp, enabling loading and unloading of bulky cargo on a cart. |
| The wheelchair-friendly Demio-i enables a wheelchair passenger to remain comfortably seated in his or her wheelchair while being helped into the vehicle, and the MPV with lift-up second-row seat has a remote-controlled sliding door and roof which can be opened simultaneously. Among the commercial vehicles to be exhibited is a delivery vehicle featuring easy-to-maintain exterior paint, which is stain-resistant and can be cleaned easily without using any detergent. The insightful and functional enhancements showcased in these exhibits demonstrate Mazda's commitment to develop cars which deliver Zoom-Zoom. |

|
| Titandash Clean Diesel Hybrid (prototype) |
| The Titandash Clean Diesel Hybrid is a low-emission, fuel-efficient hybrid truck combining a newly developed common-rail diesel engine (MZR-CD) and an electric motor. It employs Mazda's ingenious diesel engine technology for complete combustion based on high-pressure injection, and a continuously renewable diesel particulate filter along with EGR cooler and oxidation catalyst. Using an electric motor, the hybrid truck is about 50% more fuel efficient, emits 65% less NOx and 85% less particulate matter than the same model powered by a conventional diesel engine. |
| The hybrid system used in the Titandash optimally controls the engine and motor according to the driving conditions. The motor power assist system helps start and acceleration, cutting exhaust emissions. During deceleration, the system captures energy generated in the process, normally lost as heat, recovering it as electricity for the battery to power itself, cutting fuel consumption. The system also automatically shuts off and restarts the vehicle in stop-and-go driving conditions to prevent idling and improve fuel economy. |

| Bongo Business Concept (prototype) |
| The Bongo Business Concept is a delivery truck specifically designed for highly efficient parcel delivery in residential areas. The cargo space offers great arrangement freedom, equipped with base anchors positioned at equal intervals on the side panels, which enables installation of lashing rails, nets, and folding partition panels. An interactive fleet management system is installed for maximizing delivery efficiency by controlling the cargo room temperature, ensuring accurate delivery, and meeting many driver needs. |
| Other key elements for supporting delivery work include a cargo space floor that can store a cart underneath, a hands-free keyless system, and a fixed-type safe built into the console. The prototype vehicle exhibited will be a five-door Bongo Van, with the cargo space partitioned into three areas using foldable partitions, which enables loading and unloading without the driver entering the vehicle. |
| Demio Business Concept (prototype) |
| The Demio Business Concept has a compact easy-to-maneuver Demio body and a spacious Demio cabin, equipped with a super-low floor and a ramp. The cargo area floor features a dual configuration, which accommodates various loading modes. In the max-loading mode, in addition to the cargo loaded into the cargo area, a cart can be stored between the upper and lower floors, thanks to the rear seat that can be doubly folded forward to make space. In the cart mode, with the rear seat and upper floor folded forward, bulky luggage can be loaded mounted on a cart. |
| In addition to the same fleet management system used on the Bongo Business Concept, the vehicle features a high-speed telecommunications tool, which helps the driver keep track of sales routes and time schedules, ensures security, and enables search information and video image transmission. The highly functional cabin equipped with cutting-edge IT tools offers the convenience of an office and can accurately be described as a running work-station. |

| Demio-i
(prototype) |
| Based on the Demio, popular for its versatile and spacious cabin space, the Demio-i is a wheelchair-friendly vehicle equipped with a super-low floor and a ramp. The wheelchair specifically designed for the Demio is equipped with a headrest and a three-point seatbelt, which, combined with retractable assist-grips attached to both sides of the cabin, ensures greater safety and comfort than ever. |
| Furthermore, two sets of microphones and speakers installed in the cabin facilitate communication between the driver and the passenger in the wheelchair, while a camera and monitor allow the driver to monitor the rear seat. With a wheelchair aboard, the vehicle can seat up to three passengers, including the passenger in the wheelchair. Without a wheelchair, the vehicle can be used as a compact passenger vehicle seating five passengers. |
| MPV Automatic
Second-Row Lift Up Seat (prototype) |
| At the touch of a button on the remote control, the sliding door opens, while at the same time, the roof opens, with the seat rotating and shifting position for the passenger to easily enter/exit the vehicle regardless of their physique. The MPV also features a seat developed from a medical perspective, with an adjustable supporting position to fit the physique or posture of any passenger, providing greater riding comfort for the physically challenged. |
| Titandash LPG
Special Delivery Truck (prototype) |
| The LPG-powered Titandash is an ecological truck powered by a clean-burning LPG-engine. It meets the Japanese emission standard, and in January 2003 Mazda will apply for the E-LEV (Excellent-Low Emissions Vehicle) rating certified by seven municipalities including the Tokyo Metropolitan government. |
| Thanks to the easy-to-maintain paint technology newly developed by Mazda, the vehicle exterior is stain-resistant and can be cleaned very easily with water, without using any detergent. The Titandash is also equipped with the Mazda Collision Warning System that detects and warns the driver of objects ahead of or behind the vehicle. |
| Bongo Refrigerator Truck (mass-production vehicle) |
| The Bongo Refrigerator Truck is an innovative, environment-friendly dual-compressor refrigerator truck. A clean G-LEV gasoline-engine model has been newly added to the Bongo Refrigerator Truck lineup that originally consisted of only diesel engine models. Its quiet engine enables pre-cooling and delivery in residential areas in the early morning hours without disturbing residents. |
