Mazda Launches Enhanced Roadster with Refined Design

- Two new looks for the highest quality VS grade, a soft top made of a luxury fabric, two new body colors, and enhanced equipment -

Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the launch of the Roadster convertible sports car. The Roadster goes on sale today at Mazda Anfini and other selected Mazda dealerships throughout Japan (the VS models and new colors go on sale in August).

The Roadster is a model that truly embodies the spirit of Mazda and Mazda's brand message "Zoom-Zoom" (the love of motion that we felt in childhood), with its excellent maneuverability, open top driving, and distinctive styling. Since its debut in 1989, Mazda's Roadster has been highly acclaimed by convertible sports car enthusiasts all over the world. The total production volume of the Roadster since its original launch has now exceeded 640,000 units.* It is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's top-selling lightweight open two-seater sports car. With an ever increasing worldwide following, the Roadster continues to break its own record.
* The cumulative production volume of Roadster since its production began in April 1989 is 644,612 units (as of May 31, 2002).


Highlights:
- Mazda has introduced two new look packages for the highest quality VS grade within Roadster range, Combination A (high-quality sporty look) and Combination B (classic look). They feature black leather seats or (black interior) and beige seats (beige interior). The soft top is made of a luxury fabric that matches the interior color.
- The enhanced models have improved safety features, such as better head protection with a modified A pillar trim shape, and a child seat anchor.
- Two new body colors, Splash Green Mica and Garnet Red Mica, are now available.
- Water-repellent door glass, door mirrors and stainless steel scuff plates are standard, while a BOSE sound system is available as an option.


Major modifications to the Roadster:

1. Two new look packages for the VS grade
- Combination A- High-Quality Sporty Look
Black leather seats and aluminum toned center and shift panels are standard. The black soft top, made of water-repellent luxury fabric, matches the interior. A combination with an aggressively sporty look.

Combination B- Classic Look
A beige interior replaces the previous sandy color scheme. The steering wheel, shift knob, and center and shift panels feature dark wood trims. The beige soft top, made of water-repellent luxury fabric, matches the interior. A combination with a classic look.

2. Improved safety
- The ISO-FIX child seat anchor is an additional safety feature.
- The A pillar trim now has a different shape to reduce the potential of head injury in collisions.

3. Two new body colors available
Mazda has extended the range of color options with the introduction of two new colors, Splash Green Mica and Garnet Red Mica (the Crystal Blue has been withdrawn).

4. Enhanced standard equipment
Water-repellant door glass and water-repellent door mirror are standard on all models except the base grade M and NR-A. Stainless steel scuff plates are standard on all AT models.

5. The BOSE sound system available as a manufacturer's option
The BOSE sound system is now available on the 1600 DOHC model as a manufacturer's option.
