Mazda Motor Corporation has launched its upgraded Scrum series of micromini vehicles. The new Scrum series goes on sale today at Mazda Autozam dealerships throughout Japan.

The upgrade includes improved safety features such as driver- and passenger-side SRS^*1 airbags, four-wheel ABS (Antilock Braking System), and seatbelts with pretensioners for the front seats. These features are now available either as standard equipment or as manufacturer's options on all models except for the KL^*2 truck.

The wagon model, which has received high praise for its interior roominess and ability to seat four adults comfortably, now features a classy updated exterior design including a distinctive front grille, bonnet and bumper. In addition, the rear sliding door rails are now metal-plated and the headlights, formerly halogen units, have been changed into multi-reflector type units. These changes give the Scrum a more upscale look. In addition, the engine is equipped with a knock sensor and boost control system, and the mount position of the intercooler is changed for enhanced performance of the engine at high speeds. The lineup of Van and truck models has been revised, and some models are now more affordable.

Mazda's brand personality is described as "Stylish," "Insightful," and "Spirited." Its product philosophy is summed up in three key phrases: "Distinctive Design," "Exceptional Functionality," and "Responsive Handling and Performance."

The overall monthly sales target the Scrum series is 900 units.
