Mazda Adds Wagon Models to Scrum Series and Improves Driving Performance of Scrum Van
- New models to accommodate wider variety of customers' needs -
Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the introduction of the Scrum Wagon, a new passenger car type in the micro-mini vehicle Scrum series. The commercial vehicle Scrum Van was also upgraded, and a new model with a longer cargo box was added to the Scrum Truck to provide greater cargo capacity. The new models go on sale immediately through the Mazda Autozam dealerships throughout Japan.
The Scrum Wagon features a semi-cab over design to ensure a roomy cabin in which 4 adult passengers can quite comfortably. The back seat has a center armrest with sliding and reclining functions, increasing passenger comfort and seat utility. Scrum Wagon has a SOHC turbo engine rated at 64 horsepower that provides excellent performance at low and middle speeds. At practical speeds, fuel economy is excellent. Airbags for driver and front passenger seats as well as 4-wheel ABS are featured as standard equipment.
The Scrum Van is equipped with an improved SOHC engine with greater torque at low and middle speeds, which ensures easier city driving. Other improvements for riding comfort include noise and vibration reduction as a result of the change in the position and material of the engine mount and better driving posture due to a change in the steering column angle. Higher-grade models feature safety equipment like airbags for driver and front passenger seats and 4-wheel ABS.
The new model of Scrum Truck has a cargo box 90 mm longer than that of the current model, providing larger cargo capacity.
Mazda's brand personality is described as "Stylish," "Insightful," and "Spirited." Its product philosophy is summed up in three key phrases: "Distinctive Design," "Exceptional Functionality," and "Responsive Handling and Performance." The Scrum series was developed, emphasizing "Exceptional Functionality."
The total monthly sales target of the Scrum series is a 800 units.

The main features of Scrum Wagon are:
- Semi-cab over type body design to ensure a roomy cabin
- The body is designed in a semi-cab over type with a short bonnet in front with the engine mounted in the middle of the body under the floor, which provides a roomy cabin that 4 adult passengers can sit comfortably.
- The backseat with a center armrest is placed 90 mm further back than the Scrum Van to provide full leg room. The backseat slides 165 mm and reclines. - High-level of safety features
- Lightweight impact-absorbing body for efficient absorption of collision impact, A-A pipe connecting the right and the left A pillars, and door beams that reinforce the doors work together to ensure a high-level of safety in the case of a collision.
- Impact-absorbing construction of the steering wheel and steering column, and breakage resistant material of the instrument panel alleviate the impact on passengers in the case of a collision.
- SRS (*) airbags for driver and front passenger seats, 4-wheel ABS, and a seatbelt with load-limiter mechanism for the front passenger seat are featured as standard equipment for all models of the Scrum Wagon. - Improved comfort and versatility
- The steering wheel, gear shift, parking brake lever and inside door handles are provided with antibacterial coatings, and an antibacterial air-conditioner is equipped.
- UV coated glass is used for the front window to reduce harmful ultraviolet rays, and dark-tinted glass is used for the front door windows, rear window and rear door windows to reduce glare.
- A full logic cassette deck with an FM/AM tuner, power windows and a keyless entry system are featured as standard equipment. - Comfortable driving performance
- The SOHC engine with the maximum output of 47 kW/6,000 rpm (64 PS/6,000 rpm) and the maximum torque of 100 N_m/3,500 rpm (10.2 kg-m/3,500 rpm) ensures powerful driving at low and middle speeds and excellent fuel economy at practical speeds.
- 4WD models adopt a full-time 4-wheel-drive system.
- 4 AT and 5 MT models are available. - Luxurious interior and exterior
- Plated inner door handles, parking brake knob and AT selector button contribute to the luxurious atmosphere of the interior.
- The bonnet and rear doors feature plated garnishes.
- The top-grade model "Standoff Aeroturbo" is equipped with sporty front and rear bumpers, multi-reflector fog lamps, side spoilers, aluminum wheels and side decal, giving this model a more sporty look.

- All models of the Van and Truck model with longer cargo box are equipped with SOHC engines with a maximum output of 37 kW/6,000 rpm (50PS/6,000 rpm) and a maximum torque of 62 N_m/3,500 rpm (6.3 kg-m/3,500 rpm). The improved engine has a higher torque in low and middle speeds, which results in more comfortable city driving.
- All models of the Van and Truck model with longer cargo box have the angle of the steering column changed to ensure a more comfortable driving position.

Improved safety and comfort

- The top-grade model "Buster" features SRS airbags for driver and front passenger seats, 4-wheel ABS, and a seatbelt with load-limiter mechanism for the front passenger seat as standard equipment. Front power windows and a rear heater are included in the standard equipment for all models.

Addition of a longer cargo box model

- The newly added model has a cargo box 90 mm longer than that of the current model, providing a larger cargo capacity. Other provisions to increase the cargo capacity include the embedded the hinges of the locking handles and retractable rear-gate chains, which reduce protuberances on the cargo box.
- A pocket on the back of the driver's seat, a cup holder, door pockets for driver and front passenger seats, and an armrest are featured as standard equipment.
- SRS airbag for driver seat is available as an option for GA and PA models.
