Mazda Motor Corporation will exhibit concept cars including the RX-EVOLV equipped with a new rotary engine and present new technologies based on the message "New Ideas that Stir Your Emotions" at the 33rd Tokyo Motor Show (*). It will be held at Chiba's Makuhari Messe Convention Center from October 23 (Saturday) to November 3 (Wednesday).
As the leading concept car, the RX-EVOLV expresses the completely new four-seater sports car world that embodies Mazda's brand personality: "stylish", "insightful", and "spirited". The use of the newly developed, compact RENESIS(**) rotary engine allows a spacious interior roomy enough for four adults to enjoy sports driving without any compromise in the same body size as the RX-7.
Mazda will show several other concept cars as well, including the NEOSPACE, developed as a functional compact car, and the NEXTOURER, a new-generation touring sedan.
In addition, technological exhibits on environmental and safety topics will be presented. These include the DEMIO FCEV fuel cell electric vehicle, the Mazda DIREC-G direct fuel injection gasoline engine, the Mazda DIREC-D direct fuel injection diesel engine, the Mazda Toroidal CVT next-generation transmission, the Safety Active Seat, and the Smart Airbag.

RX-EVOLV
Mazda has consistently built sports cars
that are "fun to drive." To continue
this tradition, the RX-EVOLV incorporates
the five elements of appropriate body size,
a consistent application of thorough weight
reduction, a balanced 50-50 front-rear weight
distribution, a FR layout, and a low inertial
yaw, which together form what the company
calls "Mazda Spirited DNA". The
newly developed RENESIS rotary engine makes
it possible to satisfy all of these elements.
The RENESIS demonstrates a maximum power
output of 280 PS/9,000rpm and maximum torque
of 23.0 kg-m/8,000 rpm, even with the use
of a natural-intake engine. The RENESIS also
meets the needs of a new-millennium engine
by meeting Japanese Low Emission Vehicle
(LEV) standards, enhancing fuel economy at
all operational speeds, from idling to high-speed
driving. The RX-EVOLV is brimming with a
most of new features including technology
to change the engine performance in relation
to the driver's skill.

NEOSPACE
The NEOSPACE is a "Functional Compact Car" which has innovative features to match the versatility of customer lifestyles.
Within an easy-to-handle body size, the NEOSPACE
provides a spacious interior in which four
adults can ride in comfort. Moreover, there
are insightful new features for more effective
use of the interior. A "FreeStyle Door
System" without a B-pillar makes entry
and exit easy from the vehicle, rear NEOSPACE
KARAKURI seats can be pushed back and stored
in the sunken floor, and a sloping tale gate
makes loading and unloading of luggage easy.

NEXTOURER
The NEXTOURER is a new generation touring concept car, which blends high-speed touring performance of a luxury sedan with the functionality of an SUV.
The Flexible Package Board provides superb
functionality to create a versatile space,The
Active Height Control System provides the
optimum seating position and vehicle height.
Together with high performance, the NEXTOURER
has a high level of safety with advanced
interface functions exemplified by ITS (Intelligent
Transport Systems), the Intelligent Headlamp
System and ITS warning system. The result
is both the safety and the comfort you would
expect in a high-quality touring car.

DEMIO FCEV
The DEMIO FCEV employs newly developed fuel
cell stacks generating a maximum output of
50 kW in total and a newly developed fuel
cell drive system. Together, these enable
the vehicle to reach a top speed of 140 km/h,
50 km/h faster than previously developed
DEMIO FCEV.
In April of 1998 Mazda joined a new alliance with Ford Motor Corporation, DaimlerChrysler, and Ballard Power Systems Inc. for the development of fuel cell technology. Through the new alliance, Mazda has continued to work on research and development aimed at the realization of fuel cell technology. The DEMIO FCEV incorporates a fuel cell system developed by the alliance.
Mazda DIREC-G
The Mazda DIREC-G is a 1,498cc-displacement
direct injection gasoline engine. Fitting
with a S-VT (Sequential-Valve Timing) consecutive-phase
variable valve-timing system, the DIREC-G
engine provides higher output and torque,
while at the same time decreasing fuel consumption
and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. To deal
with the nitrogen oxides (NOx) which arise
as a byproduct of stratified combustion,
the use of a consecutive-phase variable valve-timing
mechanism and an exhaust gas re-circulation
system, as well as the newly developed NOx
reduction catalyst, dramatically reduces
NOx emissions.
Mazda DIREC-D
Mazda's newly developed direct injection turbo diesel engine, the Mazda DIREC-D, is a small and lightweight engine integrated with a common rail plenum fuel injection system and a 4-way catalyst. Its 1,998cc displacement makes it an ideal powerplant for small passenger cars.
Compared to the previous type, output is increased by about 40%, while fuel economy is also improved. Significant reductions in NOx and CO2 enable it to meet the EURO-4 emissions standard in Europe. Black smoke emissions, noise and vibration have also been dramatically reduced.
Mazda Toroidal CVT
The Mazda Toroidal CVT(continuously variable transmission) is a highly efficient, lightweight and compact next-generation transmission. It can also handle high engine output.
The combination of the half-toroidal CVT
form with a neutral geared starting system
further enhances the overall efficiency and
compactness for front wheel drive vehicle.
The system delivers superb response, quiet
operation and excellent fuel economy at the
same time. To illustrate just how economical
this system can be, the transmission was
combined with a 3.0-litter engine instead
of the usual four-speed automatic and about
20% improvement in fuel economy was achieved
in 10·15 mode.
Safety Active Seat
The Safety Active Seat is a new technology
to reduce whiplash injury. In a rear collision,
the headrest moves forward to quickly support
the head of the passenger. This reduces sharp
movement of the neck immediately after a
collision, greatly reducing the stress to
this region. In addition the Safety Active
Seat uses a seatbelt system which predicts
rear-end collisions before they occur and
then firmly restrains passenger's' bodies.
Before the imminent collision, the system
draws the head region closer to the headrest,
and keeps movement of the head and chest
to a minimum by putting pressure on the muscles
at the base of the neck, thereby decreasing
whiplash injuries.
Smart Airbag
The Smart Airbag uses a two-stage inflator.
It monitors the collision force, and deploys
the airbag in two stages in relation to the
impact force in a collision. In low-speed
collisions, inflation of the air bag is 30
percent less than that applied during high-speed
collisions, thereby reducing the impact force
on the passengers.
